Katie Lu Named First Team All-Big Ten Conference


East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State junior women’s golfer Katie Lu was named to the All-Big Ten Conference First Team in a vote of the league’s coaches, as announced by the conference on Tuesday.

Lu was one of two Spartans recognized by the league as senior Leila Raines was the recipient of the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award.

Lu has been the top player for the Spartans this year, carrying a team-best 71.13 scoring average over 32 rounds and 11 events. Her scoring average currently ranks as the second-best single season mark in Michigan State history.

The junior has been the team’s top finisher seven times this year, including winning two events, taking medalist honors at MSU’s Mary Fossum Invitational (3-under par 213) on Sept. 18 and tying for first place with junior teammate Brooke Biermann at the Briar’s Creek Invitational on March 12 (5-under par 211).

Overall this season, Lu has posted four top-5 finishes, seven among the top-10 and has finished among the top-20 overall in 10 out of 11 events played.

For her career, Lu carries a 73.56 scoring average in 81 rounds, with four career top-5 finishes, seven among the top-10 and 12 in the top-20. Lu ranks No. 4 all-time in career scoring average, one shot behind Biermann, who ranks third all-time at 73.25.

The Spartans, who won the Briar’s Creek Invitational on March 12 (4-under par 860) have posted seven top-5 team finishes this season and are ranked No. 30 in the country in the latest NCAA Rankings.

Michigan State will host the NCAA East Lansing Regional from Monday, May 6 to Wednesday, May 8 at Forest Akers West Golf Course. The Spartans, seeded No. 5 in the 12-team regional, will tee off at 9 a.m., playing alongside Pepperdine and Kentucky.
