Senior Karl Vilips posted the Cardinal’s best round of the afternoon, shaving one shot off yesterday’s effort for a 1-under 69. After a slow start that including 3-over stretch through three holes, Vilips strung together a team-leading five birdies to finish one stroke below par.
After three bogeys on holes 2, 8, and 10, Michael Thorbjornsen carded a pair of birdies in the final three holes to register a second-round 71 and stay within reach of the leaders. Sitting at 4-under through 36 holes, the senior will start tomorrow’s final trip around Stanford Golf Course five strokes behind the leaders.
Barclay Brown and Jake-Beber Frankel finished with identical scorecards for the second consecutive round, both finishing day two with 2-over 72 rounds. Ethan Gao improved upon Monday’s effort by one stroke, turning in a 4-over 74 scorecard as Stanford’s non-scoring round.
Final round of play resumes tomorrow morning at 8 a.m. PT with trips to the NCAA Men’s Championships in Carlsbad, Calif., on the line. The top five teams will automatically qualify for the NCAA tournament, in addition to the top-scoring individual on a non-advancing team. Stanford will be paired with Ole Miss and SMU.
