Cavaliers Finish 28th at NCAA Championships

CARLSBAD, Calif. – The Virginia women’s golf team finished 28th at the NCAA Championships following a third-round score of 18-over 306. The Cavaliers failed to make the 15-team cut for the final round of stroke play that decides the eight teams that advance to match play for the NCAA title.

UVA was off to its best start of the week standing at 3-over after the team had cleared the first 12 holes when the tough course conditions caught up to the Cavaliers. Virginia’s four scoring players completed the final six holes at 13-over par with just two birdies during that stretch.

The scoring average for the third round was 76.44. By comparison, Friday’s scoring average was 74.10 and Saturday’s scoring average was 75.17. Virginia finished the tournament at 50-over 914.

UVA All-American Amanda Sambach topped the team by placing 57th at 7-over 223. She shot 77 in the final round that included an eight on the par-4 13th hole during a round that saw her post 15 pars.

Megan Propeck was the Cavaliers’ next highest finisher in 114th place at 231. Jaclyn LaHa was 120th at 232, Celeste Valinho was 124th at 233 and Rebecca Skoler was 132nd at 235. LaHa had the team’s best third-round score at 1-over 73. Propeck shot 77, Skoler finished with a 79 and Valinho carded a round of 80.

Texas A&M leads the tournament heading into Monday’s final round of stroke play. The Aggies stand at 10-under 854. They are led by Adela Cernousek who tops the field after three rounds at 12-under 204. She will take a six-shot lead into the final round of stroke play.

The NCAA Championship was the 14th in the UVA program’s 21-year history. UVA’s best finishes at the NCAAs were back-to-back fourth-place showings in 2011 and 2012. Last season the Cavaliers were in 24th place after 54 holes and did not advance to the final round of stroke play.
