CARLSBAD, Calif. – Clemson senior Jonathan Nielsen has been named to the Ping All East Region Team by the College Golf Coaches Association of America.   The announcement was made on Saturday just prior to the second round of the NCAA National Tournament in Carlsbad, California.

Nielsen had a 70.79 stroke average entering the NCAA National Tournament, on pace to be the 11th best in Clemson men’s golf history.   So far this year he has six top 10 finishes, 15 rounds in the 60s and 20 under-par rounds to lead the Tigers in all three categories.  He is eight under par for his 34 rounds so far this year.

In two years, Nielsen has a 71.30 career stroke average, fifth best in Clemson history.  He is one of just six players in Clemson history to have shot under par in at least 50 percent of his career rounds.

All six of his top 10 finishes this year have been top eights, including a seventh place finish at the NCAA Chapel Hill Regional.  His 201 score was second best on the Clemson team at the regional that Clemson won on May 15 to qualify for the NCAA National Tournament.

The native of Denmark transferred to Clemson from Carson Newman where he was a Division II All-American.   His top finish this year was a third place at The Goodwin at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco.  He also finished sixth at The Blessings and eighth at the Golf Club of Georgia, two national tournaments in the fall.
