CARLSBAD, Calif. – Vanderbilt men’s golfers Matthew Riedel, William Moll, and Cole Sherwood have earned pro status through PGA TOUR University at the end of stroke play at the 2024 NCAA Men’s Golf Championship.
The trio of Vandy golfers, who all hail from Texas, finished inside the top 10 of the 2024 PGA TOUR U. rankings to earn pro status.
Riedel finished fourth in the PGA TOUR U. rankings, earning a full exemption into the Korn Ferry Tour for the rest of the season. The Houston, Texas, native also earns an exemption into the Final Stage of PGA TOUR Q-School presented by Korn Ferry. Riedel led the Commodores in a scoring average this season at 70.11 through 36 rounds of play during his final year with Vanderbilt and shot under par in 20 rounds. The graduate student collected three runner-up finishes during the 2023-24 campaign, which included tying for second at the 2024 SEC Men’s Golf Championship. Additionally, Riedel placed in the top 10 in seven tournaments.
Moll and Sherwood finished sixth and seventh in the PGA TOUR U. rankings to earn conditional status on the Korn Ferry Tour for the remainder of the current season. Each golfer earns exemption status for the remainder of the season for the North America Swing of PGA TOUR Americas. Moll and Sherwood will also earn an exemption into the Second Stage of PGA TOUR Q-School.
Moll held a scoring average of 71.19 in his last year with the Commodores. The graduate student became the first Vanderbilt golfer to claim individual medalist honors at an NCAA Regional, as he won the 2024 NCAA West Lafayette Regional. The Houston, Texas, native collected five top-10 finishes and shot under par in 18 rounds.
In October, Sherwood won the 2023 Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational to give him his third career collegiate victory. The senior posted seven top-10 finishes during his senior season. The Austin, Texas, native posted a scoring average of 70.22 during the 2023-24 collegiate campaign, while he finished under par in 16 rounds.
Riedel, Moll, and Sherwood join junior Gordon Sargent as Commodores who earned pro status this season. Sargent was the first player to earn a PGA TOUR membership via PGA TOUR University Accelerated, however, he has decided to return to Vanderbilt for his senior campaign. With Sargent already holding his PGA TOUR card he will not be eligible for the PGA TOUR U. rankings during the 2024-25 season.
