Current Illini Buchanan, Alumni Campbell Qualify for U.S. Open Monday

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Illinois men’s golf rising senior Jackson Buchanan and former Fighting Illini Brian Campbell have each qualified for the U.S. Open. The duo advanced through their respective local qualifying last month and on Monday secured spots through final qualifying to join fellow Illini Thomas Detry in the 156-player field at the 124th playing, June 13-16, at famed Pinehurst No. 2 in Pinehurst, N.C.

Buchanan, the reigning Big Ten Golfer of the Year, finished T1 with three spots up for grabs at The Golf Club of Georgia in Alpharetta, Ga., just 28 miles from his hometown of Dacula. Buchanan opened with an 8-under 64 in Round 1 and locked up his spot with a 67 (-5) in Round 2, capped by an eagle on No. 18, to finish at 131 (-13).

Campbell, currently ranked No. 11 on the Korn Ferry Tour Points List, finished T2 at Duke University Golf Club in Durham, N.C. on Monday, posting rounds of 64 (-4) and 71 (+1) to one shot off the medalist pace with a 135 (-5) with seven qualifying spots available at the site. It will mark Campbell’s third appearance in the U.S. Open; following his Big Ten Golfer of the Year campaign as a junior at Illinois in 2014, Campbell competed in his first U.S. Open – also at Pinehurst No. 2 – but missed the cut. A year later, Campbell returned to the field and finished T27 at Chambers Bay.

Detry, Campbell’s former Illini teammate for three seasons from 2012-13 to 2014-15, was exempt from qualifying as the No. 52-ranked competitor in the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR). The Belgian, and 2015 Big Ten Golfer of the Year, is also back in the field for the third time in his career after finishing T49 in 2020 at Winged Foot and missing the cut in 2021 at Torrey Pines.
