Pair Of Hole-In-Ones Highlight Cal’s Impressive First Day Of Season

SAMMAMISH, Wash. – Charlie Berridge and Wenliang Xie carded an ace apiece while Daniel Heo totaled 10 birdies for a second-round score of 63 to highlight the California men’s golf team’s opening day of the season at The Tindall on Monday. The Golden Bears – playing in their first tournament under first-year Alex and Marie Shipman Director of Men’s Golf Michael Wilson – finished the first 36 holes of play tied for second place at 15-under-par (275-278 – 553).
 
Cal is tied with No. 25 Pepperdine (-15) for second place, trailing only No. 24 Utah (-20) with 18 holes left to play.
 
Berridge, a senior, grabbed the spotlight early on with an eagle on hole 12 – he started on hole 9 – followed by his ace on the par 3, 227-yard hole 13. Using a 5-iron, Berridge sunk the hole-in-one to quickly move to 5-under-par for the day. He stayed bogey-free throughout round one, tallying two birdies on the front nine to finish with a collegiate-best 18-hole score of 64 (-7).
 
Close behind Berridge in round one was Xie, a graduate transfer from Seton Hall making his debut in the Blue and Gold. After a bogey on his opening hole on 11, Xie was flawless the rest of the way, registering five birdies, including four in his final five holes to round out a 4-under-par 67. Despite an up-and-down second round that ended in a 4-over-par 75, Xie joined Berridge with an ace of his own on the par 3, 118-yard hole 2, sinking a hole-in-one with a 56-degree wedge.
 
The rest of the day was all Heo, who amassed 10 birdies on the way to a collegiate-low 63 (-8) in round two. Heo, starting on hole 10, reeled off four straight birdies to begin round two and found himself at 9-under-par through 17 holes before a bogey on hole 9 ended his day.
 
Heo and Berridge will enter Tuesday’s third and final round at 7-under-par, just two strokes behind clubhouse leader Davis Johnson (-9) of Utah.
