Duke Continues to Lead the Landfall Tradition Heading into Final Round


WILMINGTON, N.C.After a slow start to the morning, all five members of the Duke women’s golf team shot under par on the back nine en route to the Blue Devils carding a 5-under-par, 283, on Saturday in the second round of the Landfall Tradition, which is being contested at the 6,178-yard, Par-72 Country Club of Landfall Dye Course in Wilmington. 
 
With 18 holes remaining, Duke holds a 5-stroke lead with a season-best 14-under, 562, with North Carolina (567) and Florida State (567) tied for second. 
 
At the end of the day, each Blue Devil finished with an even-par or better paced by a 2-under, 70, by Carla De Troia and Katie Li.  Li, a native of Basking Ridge, N.J., is two strokes off the individual lead with a 7-under, 137, behind Sophia Burnett of South Carolina (135). 
 
How It Happened

  • Junior Katie Li registered a 2-under, 70, in the second round.She parred the first two holes and then bogeyed No. 3.Li carded two more pars and then hit her hybrid from 214 yards to 15 feet for eagle to move to 1-under for the day.She closed the front nine with two pars and a bogey to shoot even-par, 36.On the back, Li birdied No. 11 from 13 feet and then rolled in an 18-foot birdie on No. 13, before parring the final five holes.
  • Coming off signing for four straight rounds in the 60s, junior Andie Smith totaled a 1-under, 71, on Saturday and enters the final round tied for sixth overall with a 4-under, 140.Smith, who is from Hobe Sound, Fla., was 2-over-par through 11 holes, which included back-to-back key up-and-downs on holes No. 8 and No. 9 with 15-foot par putts.She turned things around on hole No. 12 as she hit her 3-wood from 227 yards to 15 feet and made the eagle putt to get back to even.Smith drained a 20-foot off the green birdie putt on No. 15, bogeyed No. 16 and rolled in a 12-footer for birdie on No. 17 to finish the day with a 71.She hit 10 fairways had 26 putts on the day.
  • Freshman Carla De Troia turned in a 2-under, 70, to move into a tie for 29th on the individual leaderboard.After six straight pars in the morning, she bogeyed No. 7 and then birdied No. 9 to make the turn at even-par, 36.After a bogey to open the back nine, De Troia played the final eight holes at 3-under-par with four birdies.She birdied No. 13 and then had three straight from 16-18.
