Gentry Scheve matched his collegiate career best with an opening-round 66 (-4) to lead the Nebraska men’s golf team on the first day of the Visit Knoxville Collegiate on Friday in Louden, Tenn.

Scheve, a senior from Emporia, Kan., got off to a scorching start five birdies on the front nine of the par-70, 7,280-yard layout at the Tennessee National Golf Club. He opened with a birdie on the 433-yard, par-4 first hole, before pars on No. 2 and No. 3 paved the way for three consecutive birdies on No. 4, 5 and 6 quickly pushed him to four-under through six. He added another birdie on No. 8 before a par on No. 9 allowed him to take the turn at 30 (-5).

Pars on No. 10 and 11 open the back before he registered his sixth birdie of the round on the 209-yard, par-3 No. 12 to push him to six-under atop the leaderboard. He added a par on No. 13, before back-to-back bogeys on No. 14 and 15 dropped him to four-under. He closed the round with three consecutive pars.

Scheve’s total matched his previous career best, which came with a 66 (-6) at the Tiger Collegiate in Columbia, Mo., April 10, 2023. Although the Club at Old Hawthorne played at par-72, it was just 7,221 yards.

Tom Fischer from Ole Miss was the only golfer to put together a better round than Scheve on the day, closing the first 18 holes at 65 (-5).

Fifth-year senior Will Marshall and senior Reed Malleck added rounds of 72 (+2), while Grant Jabenis provided Nebraska with its final score in the five-count-four scoring format.

As a team, Nebraska will enter Saturday’s second round in sixth place at 283 (+3) in the 14-team field. The hosts from No. 9 Tennessee put up the top team score of the first round with a 273 (-7), while SEC rivals No. 28 Mississippi State (274) and No. 29 Ole Miss (277) were hot on the heels of the Volunteers. Golfweek preseason No. 21 East Tennessee State (275) and No. 25 North Florida (280) rounded out the top five teams.

Nebraska returns to the course for Saturday’s second round at the Visit Knoxville Collegiate beginning with Husker tee times at 9:45 a.m. (CT). Live scoring is available on Huskers.com through Golfstat.
