BRYAN, Texas – Alabama juniors Canon Claycomb and Thomas Ponder teed off the opening round of the 2022 NCAA Men’s Golf Bryan Regional Monday.
Claycomb finished the day with an even par 72 to place him in a tie for 26th overall, while Ponder was a shot back at 1-over 73 to end the day in a tie for 34th position.
The top individual not on an advancing team from the regional will qualify to compete at the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships which will be played May 27-June 1 in Scottsdale, Ariz.
- After three pars to begin the day, Claycomb sunk his first of four birdie putts on the 387-yard par 4 fourth hole to drop to 1-under through four
- Claycomb recorded three pars, a double bogey on No. 5 and a bogey on No. 9 to finish the front nine at 2-over par
- Birdies across three of his first seven holes on the back nine dropped him to 1-under for the day with two holes remaining
- He finished the round with a bogey to result in the even-par afternoon
- Ponder finished with eight pars on the front nine with the only blemish coming via a double bogey on No. 4 to result in a 2-over score at the turn
- His first birdie came on the par 4 12th hole to fall to 1-over on the day
- After a bogey on No. 14, Ponder collected a second birdie across four holes with a birdie on No. 15
- He went on to par the final three holes which resulted in the 1-over 73
Bryan Regional Information
- Ponder and Claycomb will tee off round two at 9:20 a.m. CT and 9:31 a.m. CT, respectively

- A total of 13 teams and 10 individuals are competing at the par 72, 7,146-yard Traditions Club in Bryan, Texas
- The top individual not associated with an advancing team will qualify for a spot at the 2022 NCAA Men’s Golf Championships, which will be held at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz., May 27-June 1
