Alabama Men’s Golf in 10th after Opening Round of Cabo Collegiate Invitational


CABO SAN LUCAS, Mexico – The No. 17 Alabama men’s golf team ended the opening round of play at the Cabo Collegiate Invitational in a tie with No. 18 Oklahoma State for 10th overall at 14-over par 298. Both the Crimson Tide and Cowboys are two of the 13 teams in the 15-team field ranked among the nation’s top 50 according to Golfstat.com.

The Crimson Tide was led in round one by Canon Claycomb’s even par 71 which included five birdies and five bogeys on the day. Claycomb has now shot par or better in all seven rounds of the spring season, bringing his total to a team-leading 15 such rounds this season.

The second round will begin with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. Monday morning on the par 72, 7,156-yard Twin Dolphin Club.

Round One Highlights

  • Canon Claycomb began the day with three consecutive birdies on the front nine and back-to-back birdies to start the back nine to lead UA with his five birdies on the day
  • Claycomb’s birdie total was tied for fifth-best among all individuals
  • Jones Free ended the day at 4-over par 75 and is in a tie for 40th
  • Both Nick Dunlap and Thomas Ponder finished at 5-over 76 and are tied in 48th position
  • JP Cave rounded out the Crimson Tide golfers in a tie for 64th with a 78

Tournament Field

  • Top-ranked Vanderbilt (-4) owns a four-shot lead over No. 44 Ole Miss (E) entering the second round of play
  • Three teams are tied for third at +4 in No. 2 Texas, No. 3 Arizona State and No. 23 Baylor
  • No. 19 Arizona (+7), No. 48 Arkansas (+8), No. 9 Florida State (+10) and No. 50 Houston (+12) all ranked just ahead of the Tide
  • Now in its 13th season as a tournament, the Cabo Collegiate is being played at the Twin Dolphin Club, a course designed by Fred Couples, this year due to a construction project going on at the normal venue (Cove Club at Cabo De Sol)
