Tar Heel senior Crista Izuzquiza shot a final-round 1-under-par 71 and sophomore Megan Streicher posted even par as the University of North Carolina women’s golf team equaled the third-best score of the day at the Mary Fossum Invitational Monday at the Forest Akers West Golf Course in East Lansing, Mich.
Carolina shot 290 on Monday, its best round of the two-day, 54-hole tournament hosted by Michigan State. The Tar Heels finished ninth in the 15-team field at 26-over 890. Tournament champion Purdue (284) and Maryland (289) were the only teams to shoot lower final rounds than the Tar Heels.
Streicher and fifth-year senior Kayla Smith, whose 71 yesterday in the first 18 holes was UNC’s low round of the tournament, both tied for 23rd place to lead the Tar Heels. Smith shot 71-78-73 for a 6-over 222, while Streicher shot 75-75-72.
Izuzquiza had Carolina’s low round today with the 71 and tied for 26th at 8-over 224 (78-75-71). Freshman Reagan Southerland (75-78-74) tied for 40th at 11-over 227 and Ian Iadpluem and Riley Quartermain tied for 52nd at 14 over.
Purdue shot 290-284-284 for a 6-under 858 to win the tournament by 10 strokes over the host Spartans (+4). Ohio State was third at 15 over, the Terrapins were fourth at 17 over and Tennessee was fifth at +20.
Michigan State’s Katie Lu (70-69-74) was medalist with a 3-under 213. She edged Purdue’s Ashley Kozlowski by a stroke.
The Tar Heels return to action Friday through Sunday in Nashville at the Mason Rudolph Championship at Vanderbilt’s Legends Course.
