DURHAM, N.C. – Penn State men’s golf junior Patrick Sheehan sits in third place, while the Nittany Lions are eighth as a team after Saturday’s opening 36 holes at Duke’s Rod Myers Invitational.
Sheehan continued his strong start to the season with a bogey-free first round as he fired four birdies and finished at 4-under, 68. The Doylestown, Pa. native had four birdies and an eagle in the second round to once again shoot 4-under, 68, and finish the day at 8-under, 136 total, to hold down third place heading into Sunday’s final round. Sheehan is three strokes back of the current first-place golfer of North Carolina (11-under), and one stroke back of the second-place athlete from NC State (9-under).
Freshman Morgan Lofland opened the day strong with a 3-under, 69, with four birdies. He shot 4-over, 76, in the second 18 to finish the day at 1-over, 145, and in a tie for 25th.
Graduate student Lou Olsakovsky shot a 73 and 77, respectively, in the first two round and is tied for 57th with a 6-over, 150. Junior Jimmy Meyers rebounded from a 7-over, 79, opening round to shoot 3-over, 75, in the second round and is tied for 68th at 10-over, 154. Junior Ben Smith is in 80th place after carding an 80 and 81 and finishing at 17-over, 161, on the day.
No. 4 North Carolina leads the 14-team field with a 25-under, 551 team total, while NC State sits second at 17-under, 559. Penn State is eighth with a 9-over, 585.
Action at the Rod Myers Invitational concludes Sunday with 7:35 a.m. tee times for the final 18 holes.
