Vols Defeat No. 1 Vanderbilt, Capture SEC Fall Match Play Title

VESTAVIA HILLS, Ala. – The 12th-ranked Tennessee men’s golf team captured the SEC Fall Match Play title Tuesday, defeating No. 1 Vanderbilt in the event’s match play final, 3-2.

Redshirt freshman Lance Simpson, redshirt junior Jake Hall and redshirt junior Bryce Lewis all captured wins for the Vols at Old Overton Club on Tuesday, giving Tennessee its sixth tournament title of the Brennan Webb era.

The Vols qualified to face Vanderbilt in the event’s match play championship after finishing in second place out of 14 teams in the three-round stroke play portion of the event that concluded Monday.

Jake Hall, who finished tied for second place in the stroke play portion of the event, gave Tennessee its first win of the day, pulling away from Vanderbilt’s Cole Sherwood on the back nine after a back-and-forth front nine to capture a 3&2 win.

After trailing by a hole to William Moll through 15 holes, Lance Simpson—the stroke play 10th-place finisher—rebounded to win three straight from hole 16 on, eventually capturing a 2-up victory to give Tennessee its second match win of the day.

Despite a furious comeback from Vanderbilt’s Reid Davenport in which he won four out of five holes on the back nine, Lewis recorded a tie on hole 18 to secure the 1-up win and give Tennessee the team title.

Redshirt sophomore Cade Russell and freshman Caleb Surratt both fell in their matches by finals of 4&2 and 6&5, respectively.

The tournament win marks the Vols’ first team tournament title since the 2020 Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic, which took place just before the COVID-19 shutdown of the 2019-20 season.
