Luke Potter earns Runner-up at East Lake Cup; Team takes 1st heading to Match Play

ATLANTA, Ga. – Freshman Luke Potter led the team Monday after shooting a three-under 69 that made him runner-up after the first round of the East Lake Cup. Potter shot a bogey-free 32 on the back-nine that included an eagle, and two birdies through a six hole span.

Including the freshman, Men’s Golf had Josele Ballester shoot a 70 (-2), Preston Summerhays shoot a 71 (-1) and Michael Mjaaseth with a 71 (-1) to help them take the first seed heading into Match Play on Tuesday against Pepperdine. Ryggs Johnston shot a 77 (+5) to conclude the scoring for the Sun Devils.

“The front nine is tough and we stayed steady and made some key pars to stay alive then we caught some fire on the back nine.” Head coach Matt Thurmond said. “Texas made a late charge but we played 18 really well to sneak ahead.”

A contribution to the Sun Devils success on Monday was their ability to make birdies on the par 5’s, as they shot 10-under on the four par-fives through the course, which was the best out of four teams.

The freshman duo between Potter and Mjaaseth shot a combined three-under par and contributed seven birdies and one eagle on the day to help ASU take the East Lake Cup team title.

“I love the play by our freshmen. This is a tough track and they showed big maturity.” Thurmond said.

The Sun Devils will look to continue momentum tomorrow as they face Pepperdine in the match play portion of the East Lake Cup. Potter starts ASU’s action on the day, teeing off at 11:15 local time. Live coverage begins on the Golf Channel tomorrow at 3 ET/12 MST.
