Maryland Men’s Golf Team To Open 2023 at Big Ten Match Play Championship


PALM COAST, Fla – The Maryland men’s golf team is returning to the fairways for the first tournament of the spring 2023 season and fifth of the 2022-23 campaign in the Big Ten Match Play Championship this week, hosted by the Big Ten conference in conjunction with conference foe Indiana.

Over the two-day tournament (Feb. 3-4), the Terrapins will play the par-72 – 6,981-yard at the Ocean Course at Hammock Beach Resort designed by 18-times major champion Jack Nicklaus. 

The 15th-annual edition of the match play format tournament will consist of a single-elimination bracket using the final Golfstat rankings from Nov. 15, 2022. Play will begin at 8:00 a.m. on both days. Each team match will consist of six individual matches.

The squad will be led by senior Will Koras of Lutherville, Md, senior Will Celiberti of Ridgewood, N.J.,  freshman Ronnie Kim of Olney, Md., senior Dillon Brown of Halifax, Mass., freshman Armand Papaziani of Mougins, France, and Constantin Mons of Hamburg, Germany will round out the Terps’ lineup.

The No. 9 seed Maryland will have a bye during the morning session and take on the No. 1 seed Northwestern in the afternoon. 

“We’re focused on Northwestern right now. They’re the No. 1 – overall seed right now,” said head coach John Phillips. “We’re just focused on Friday afternoon. Koras, Celiberti, and Brown all have experience on the Ocean Course, so that will help us as we prepare for the Wildcats.”

On Saturday, the morning session features the championship semifinals and consolation semifinals, while Saturday afternoon concludes with the championship, third, fifth, and seventh-place matches.

Nine of the 14 conference teams will participate in the tournament: No. 1 Northwestern, No. 2 Michigan State, defending champions No. 3 Indiana, No. 4 Nebraska, No. 5 Minnesota, No. 6 Rutgers, No. 7 Penn State, No. 8 Michigan, and No. 9 Maryland.

Last season, the Terrapins finished the Match Play Championship overall record of 1-2 with a solo victory over Nebraska and Dillon Brown winning two of his three matches.
