W. Golf Opens Spring Season At Collegiate Invitational

GUADALAJARA, Mexico — Never a squad to back down from a challenge, the No. 10 ranked Florida State Women’s Golf team opens its spring season Sunday at the Collegiate Invitational at the Guadalajara Country Club.  The Seminoles are one of four teams in the 12-team field which is ranked in the nation’s top-15 by Golfstat, and will look to continue their success after earning one team championship, and four top four finishes during their successful fall season.

Play in the Collegiate Invitational begins on Sunday with 27 holes, and concludes on Monday as the teams complete a second set of 27 holes.

“Having the opportunity to take the team to Mexico is an exciting way to start the spring,” said Head Coach Amy Bond.  “Playing in a country is different that we haven’t done in a long time.  Experiencing a different culture and an environment with elevation is a great chance to learn something new.

“The tournament includes a number of teams we haven’t seen this season, and is a great way to kick off the spring.  The players have worked extremely hard during the winter, and it will be fun to get back on the course and evaluate their progress.“

The Seminoles begin play in their first event of the spring with a lineup consisting of three players who have been invited to play in the 2023 Augusta National Women’s Amateur (Charlotte Heath, Amelia Williamson, and Lottie Woad), a junior who has led the Seminoles to a pair of top-10 finishes in the last two NCAA Championship Finals (Alice Hodge) and a sophomore who helped Florida State win the team championship at the Barbara Nicklaus Cup in the fall of 2021 (Kaylah Williams).

“The players in our lineup for the Collegiate Invitational has not only played a lot of important golf as Seminoles, but have competed in many incredibly high level tournaments around the world,” said Bond.  “We are very excited to see what this particular group of women can do as a team.  They all played well during the fall, and in-between the fall and spring semesters, so each one of them should be tournament ready when play begins on Sunday.”

No. 10 Florida State will compete against No. 8 Ole Miss, No. 12 Virginia, No. 13 Arizona, No. 24 Baylor, No. 29 Michigan, No. 38 Tennessee, No. 39 North Carolina, No. 40 Georgia, No. 45 NC State, No. 46 Maryland and No. 49 California for the team championship.  Virginia is the defending champion, as the Cavaliers rallied to finish two shots ahead…
