Vanderbilt Men's Golf | Sherwood Leads Vandy on Day 1 of Watersound

PANAMA CITY BEACH, Florida — Cole Sherwood fired a 5-under-par to lead Vanderbilt into a tie for first place after 18 holes at the Watersound Invitational on Sunday.

Sherwood overcame two bogeys to start his back nine with a strong of four birdies in as many holes.

As a team, Vandy had every player under-par and was 9-under-par. Georgia Tech also shot a 279 to tie the Commodores and those two squads lead Alabama by three shots.

“It was fun to get back into competition and I thought we had a good start today with all six of our guys battling,” Vandy head coach Scott Limbaugh said. “Every single day we are learning about our team and it’s important to always understand that we can’t skip steps. We got off to a good start this morning and I really was excited to see our first three guys playing well and playing with passion.

“Cole played a big round for the team and really did a great job keeping momentum with his putter. The other guys did a lot of good things and also some things we can do better. What I do know is they have a desire to compete and I love that.”

Matthew Riedel found four birdies on the Shark’s Tooth Golf Course and finished at 2-under-par. He’s tied for 14th overall.

Gordon Sargent, Jackson Van Paris and Wells Williams also shot a 71 (-1) and are tied for 17th overall. Reid Davenport, competing as an individual, was even-par on the day and is tied for 26th.

“Monday is an important day because it’s our next opportunity to play,” Limbaugh said. “We need to have a sense of urgency about what we are doing. We need to stay strong doing the little things to our standards and continue to have great self talk and commitment levels to every shot.”

Vanderbilt is scheduled to tee off at 10 a.m. Monday alongside Alabama and North Carolina State. Live scoring can be found HERE.
