PALM DESERT, Calif. – Javier Barcos logged his third top 10 finish of the season and University of Utah men’s golf team managed a fourth-place finish at the Desert Intercollegiate, which reached its conclusion on Friday with 18 holes at the Classic Club Golf Course.
“Javi did a nice job on his final nine holes,” said head coach Garrett Clegg, “and Brandon played his best tournament of his career, which is something to build on. Other than those, [there were] not a lot of positives.”
Barcos had to battle back to get into the top 10 after a round patch on the front nine put him at 2-over, but he regained his footing with a birdie on the seventh. On the back nine, Barcos closed with three more birdies in his last five tries and that run included red scores on the 17th and 18th for round and tournament scores of 1-under that bumped him up into a tie for 10th.
Brandon Robison was responsible for Utah’s second-lowest Friday score and his 2-over 218 for the tournament goes down as his lowest 54-hole mark as a Ute. Robison was at his best on the front nine, were he played even golf and he ended the day with three total birdies. Overall, Robison was 1-over in the final round.
Martín León achieved his highest finish of the season by earning a share of 15th. Leon was also even on the front nine and found a back nine bright spot on the 18th, when he posted his second birdie of the afternoon. León shot 2-over on Friday and his 54-hole score was 1-over.
Go Nakatsukasa matched Barcos’ birdie total on the day with a team-high five and finished tied for 37th. Braxton Watts landed in 87th while Tanner Telford, playing as an individual, placed 79th. Utah’s final team score was 4-over and that put them fourth, their highest finish of the 2022-23 campaign to this point.
The Utes will be heading to the Bandon Dunes Collegiate, which is scheduled for March 12-14 in Bandon, Ore.
