Alabama Opens Postseason Play Wednesday at the 2023 SEC Men’s Golf Championships


ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – The Alabama men’s golf team will begin postseason play Wednesday morning when it tees off the 2023 Southeastern Conference Men’s Golf Championships. The tournament will take place Wednesday through Sunday, April 19-23, in St. Simons Island, Ga., on the par 70, 7,005-yard Sea Island Golf Club Seaside Course.

All 14 schools from the SEC will compete in a 54-hole, stroke-play format, which features 18 holes Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Eight teams will advance to the match-play quarterfinals Saturday morning, with four teams moving on to the match-play semifinals Saturday afternoon. The final two teams will then go head-to-head in the match-play finals on Sunday.

This marks the 22nd-straight year that the championship has will be held at the Sea Island Golf Club dating back to 2001, and the Tide has won four of its five titles since then – 2008, 2012, 2013 and 2014 (also won 1979 SEC Championship)

THE LINEUP 

  • The Crimson Tide’s lineup for the event will feature Canon Claycomb, Nick Dunlap, Thomas Ponder, JP Cave and Jonathan Griz
  • Alabama’s lineup features three starters averaging under 72.00 strokes per round in Dunlap (70.48, -0.98), Claycomb (71.07, -0.37) and Ponder (71.33, +0.11)
  • The trio not only lead Alabama but are ranked among the top-100 collegiate golfers in the nation, according to Golfweek’s Individual Rankings
  • Dunlap leads the way at No. 28 in the nation, Claycomb checks in at No. 50 while Ponder is No. 66
  • JP Cave will be in the No. 4 slot and is averaging 72.61 strokes per round with a +1.11 average vs. par
  • Fresh off a sixth-place finish as an individual at the Mossy Oak Collegiate, Jonathan Griz slides into the No. 5 slot with averages of 73.22 strokes and +1.56 vs. par
  • Jones Free will also serve as the alternate golfer this year with season averages of 73.56 strokes and +1.72 vs. par

  • The 2023 SEC Championship field features seven teams that are ranked inside the nation’s top-20, according to Golfstat.com
