Golden Bear Recognized For Standout Junior Campaign

STILLWATER, Okla. – California men’s golfer Sampson Zheng was named to the 2023 NCAA Division I PING All-West Region Team, the Golf Coaches Association of America announced Saturday. Zheng was one of 26 golfers to earn a spot on the All-West Region squad this year and is the first Golden Bear to receive the honor since 2019.

An impressive junior season saw Zheng average 69.83 strokes per round over 10 events and 31 total rounds played. He finished in the top 10 in six of the 10 events he competed in, which included co-medalist honors at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate, a runner-up effort that helped Cal win the team title at the Alister Mackenzie Invitational, back-to-back fifth-place finishes at The Goodwin and the Western Intercollegiate, and a tie for seventh place in the NCAA Morgan Hill Regional earlier this month. Zheng shot a whopping 41-under par while anchoring Cal’s lineup throughout the 2022-23 campaign, only twice shooting over par.

Zheng was additionally tabbed to the All-Pac-12 First Team and was an automatic qualifier for the Arnold Palmer Cup, in which he’ll play on the international team in June.
