Gamecocks T-2nd, Three Back at Folds of Honor Collegiate – University of South Carolina Athletics

GRAND HAVEN, Mich. – South Carolina sits T-2nd, three shots off the pace at the Folds of Honor Collegiate after 36 holes. The Gamecocks shot 291 (+7) in firm, fast and windy conditions on Tuesday.

Michigan State posted the round of the day with a 5-under 279 to take the lead. The Spartans were the only team in the field to break par.

Carolina started on the back today and made the turn with a comfortable lead. The Gamecocks had a tough stretch however in the middle of the team’s back nine on the front side of the course. The team’s four counting scores rallied though with four birdies on the final two holes to solidify a spot in the final group on Wednesday.

“We lost a lot of shots on our back nine, but we had some guys hang in there,” said head coach Bill McDonald “It’s disappointing that we have put ourselves in this position, but weather permitting tomorrow, we still have a chance to win.”

Sophomore Zach Adams paced Carolina again with an even par 71. The Charleston, S.C., native was 1-under through 14 holes and just one shot off the individual lead, but he missed the green left at the par-5 sixth hole and made double. Adams rallied with a long birdie make from off the green at the par-4 eighth. He just missed another birdie attempt at the ninth. Adams is currently T-2nd at 2-under for the tournament, three shots back of Nick Matthews from NC State.

Freshman Bo Carpenter battled and shot 72 (+1). He made the turn at 1-under then went through a difficult stretch with bogeys on four of five holes on the front. Carpenter did not let that phase him as he finished with birdies on two of his final three holes of the day.

Junior Nathan Franks shot 73 (+2) with a birdie on his final hole of the day. The Roebuck, S.C., native led the team with five red numbers on his scorecard in round two. Transfer Frankie Harris was Carolina’s final counting score with a 75 (+4). He also went through a tough stretch late in the round but finished strong with a birdie at the ninth. Senior Rafe Reynolds shot 78 (+7).

Due to inclement weather in the forecast, the final round will begin at 8:30 a.m. (ET) on Wednesday. Golf Channel will again have live coverage, shifting its broadcast times up as well from 2 to 5 p.m. Reynolds will lead things off for the Gamecocks at 10:10 a.m. from hole one. Live scoring will be available via Golfstat.
