Wildcats Shoot 8-Under In 36-Hole Opening Day of Windy City Classic

GOLF, Ill. – Arizona Women’s Golf finished its marathon of 36 holes on the opening day of the Windy City Classic in eighth place at 8-under par as a team. The tournament’s race against sunset kept five teams from completing their second rounds on Monday after Arizona was able to finish both of its rounds. Sophomore Nena Wongthanavimok carded the Wildcats’ lowest score of the day at 3-under with rounds of 70 and 71. Wongthanavimok’s play put her in a tie for 18th place on Monday.

“We battled through a long and challenging day, and we played our best golf on the last nine holes,” said head coach Laura Ianello. “The fact we had our best scores after playing 27 holes is a testament to our team and our ability to compete until the end. We have a couple of things to clean up on a few of the holes that really tested us today. If we can come out and play our final round like our final nine holes on Monday, we will be in a good spot to end the tournament.”

Arizona was lights out on the front nine holes of Glen View Club in Monday’s second round, sinking 11 birdies and only recording two bogeys. Junior Lilas Pinthier led that final charge of the day by sinking four birdies without a bogey. Pinthier’s blistering low run included three consecutive birdies on the fifth, sixth and seventh holes.

The Wildcats shot 4-under par as a team in both rounds on Monday and sit four strokes behind the next three teams above them on the leaderboard. Pinthier also joined Wongthanavimok in the top 30 of the individual leader boards at 2-under for the day.

Arizona’s morning round of 18 holes on Monday was led by Nena Wongthanavimok who carded a 2-under round of 70 to pace the Wildcats to 4-under performance as a team. Wongthanavimok was tied with Farah O’Keefe from Texas for the best par-3 scoring average of the field for the first round. Carolina Melgrati and Julia Misemer capped their mornings by breaking par with rounds of 71 to push the Cats into seventh place going into the afternoon round.

The five teams with unfinished second rounds will be the first off on Tuesday morning before the entire field commences their third and final rounds.
