USC Women's Golf Brings Home a Bronze Medal from the East Lake Cup

Women’s Golf | November 01, 2023

ATLANTA – USC women’s golf bounced back in the consolation match, as it bested Texas A&M 3-2 to claim third place at the East Lake Cup on Wednesday, Nov. 1, at the Atlanta Athletic Club in Atlanta.

The Women of Troy hosted several players who stepped up in a big way to take down the Aggies. Texas A&M was fresh off a defeat to Stanford in extra holes and was ready to rebound themselves. However, USC had other plans, as junior Amari Avery, senior Brianna Navarrosa and sophomore Catherine Park took the three match points to clinch the bronze.

Avery was the first player off the tee, and with that came some early morning jitters. The junior fell behind or was tied for the first eight holes but found her rhythm right before the back nine. Avery took a one-up lead on hole No. 9 and further expanded that lead before shutting the door on hole No. 15, as she won 4&3.

Navarrosa, on the other side, held her advantage throughout. The senior claimed the first three holes of the afternoon and only allowed the lead to dwindle to two after that point. Navarrosa, who went 2-0 in match play during the week for the Trojans, won her match 3&2. The final player to bring home a point was Catherine Park. Park, like Navarrosa, held the advantage throughout, but after her opponent tied it on hole No. 10, she found a second gear. During the holes of No. 11-15, the sophomore accumulated four-hole wins before eventually winning 4&3.

RESULTS:

Amari Avery def. Slaughter 4&3

Fernandez Garcia-Poggio def. Bailey Shoemaker 1 UP

Brianna Navarrosa def. Nixon 3&2

J. Park def. Xin (Cindy) Kou 9&8

Catherine Park def. Calibuso-Kwee 4&3

The Trojans will take a break during the winter as they resume play with another match against Texas A&M on Saturday, Jan. 13, at The Farms C.C. in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.
