McCulloch Ties for Eighth as Spartans Finish Play at the Ford


East Lansing, Mich. – Junior Ashton McCulloch fired a 6-under par 210 and tied for eighth place individually as Michigan State’s men’s golf team finished in eighth place at the inaugural Invitational at The Ford, hosted by Georgia Southern at the Ford Field & River Club in Richmond Hill, Ga.

The two-day, 54-hole tournament started on Monday, but the second round was halted due to darkness on Monday evening. The eight-team field finished the second round on Tuesday morning before playing the third and final round.

Wisconsin fired a 24-under par 840 and won the tournament by one shot over Wake Forest, second at 23-under par 841. Notre Dame placed third (18-under par 846), with Michigan in fourth place (8-under par 856) and Utah in fifth place (6-under par 858).

The Spartans closed the tournament with a 1-under par 287 to finish in eighth place at even-par 864 (284-293-287).

McCulloch posted two rounds under par, with a 4-under par 68 in the first round and closing with a 3-under par 69 on Tuesday to finish at 6-under par 210 (68-73-69).

Graduate students Drew Hackett tied for 17th place at 1-under par 215 (69-76-70) and senior August Meekhof tied for 33rd place at 3-over par 219 (74-70-75).

Senior Bradley Smithson tied for 48th place at 9-over par 225 (73-74-78) and freshman Lorenzo Pinili finished in 54th place at 14-over par 230 (76-81-73).

Playing as an individual, freshman Lucas Acevedo tied for 48th place at 9-over par 225 (75-77-73).

The Spartans are back in action at the Colleton River Collegiate in Bluffton, S.C. next week. The two-day, 54-hole tournament starts on Monday, March 4 and concludes on Tuesday, March 5.
