Robison Possesses Top 10 Spot for Utah Golf at The Goodwin

SAN FRANCISCOBrandon Robison matched his lowest score of the season to grab a share of eighth and the University of Utah men’s golf team owns eighth place with one round of The Goodwin completed at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco on Monday.

“We are in a good position after round one,” said coach Garrett Clegg. “We did some really good things today and all of our guys were close to having great rounds. Brandon and Braxton played really well and both Sergio and Gabriel had solid days. Sergio had one bad hole and Gabriel just made a few too many bogeys, but Braxton made some great birdies and Brandon had very few mistakes! It was a solid opening round. Tomorrow the weather is supposed to be really tough, so that should be the real challenge.”

Robison was steady all day, shooting even-par on the front nine and maintaining that score through his first 14 holes. He then carded back-to-back birdies on the 15th and 16th, which help offset a late bogey and put the Centerville, Utah native at 1-under through round one and tied for seventh. Robison has now been under 70 three times in his last four tries.

Braxton Watts followed Robison on the leaderboard for the Utes and his time on the front nine included three consecutive birdies on holes No. 5 through No. 7. Watts capped the first half of his day at 1-under and later added another red score on the back nine. The junior is tied for 32nd, having closed out the first round 1-over.

Both Sergio Jimenez and Gabriel Palacios are among those sharing 46th and they entered the clubhouse at 2-over. Jimenez started the day 1-under before the turn, highlighted by a birdie on the par-4 seventh. Palacios’ opening round included four total birdies, matching Watts for the team’s highest Monday total. Javier Barcos will enter round two tied for 70th in a tournament that has more then 160 players competing.

In a field of 31 teams, the Utes are in sole possession of eight place after one day at 4-over. The teams Utah will enter Friday in front of include No. 20 California and No, 24 Oregon and fellow Pac-12 schools UCLA, Oregon State, Colorado, Washington State and USC.
