Men’s Golf Completes First Day at Illini Spring Collegiate


East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State’s men’s golf team shot a 6-over 290 in the second round and is tied for third place among 12 teams after the first day of play at the Fighting Illini Spring Collegiate in Champaign, Ill.

The two-day, 54-hole tournament is being held at the par-71, 7,503-yard Atkins Golf Club on the campus of the University of Illinois.

After a 15-over par 299 in the opening round, the Spartans bounced back with a 6-over par 290 in Saturday’s afternoon round.

Day One Results

Host Illinois shot a 4-over par 572 (281-291) and holds a 14-shot lead over second-place Northwestern (18-over par 586). The Spartans are tied for third place with Michigan at 21-over par 589 and Toledo rounds out the top-five teams (25-over par 593).

Junior Ashton McCulloch leads the Spartans at 1-over par 143 (74-69 and is in fourth place. McCulloch fired a 2-under par 69 in the second round.

Graduate Bradley Smithson is tied for ninth place at 4-over par 146, including an even-par 72 in the afternoon session.

Senior August Meekhof is tied for 23rd place at 7-over par 149 (76-73) and freshman Lucas Acevedo is tied for 33rd place at 9-over par 151 (75-76).

Graduate student Drew Hackett shot a 14-over par 156 (79-77) and is tied for 50th place and freshman Lorenzo Pinili, playing as an individual, is tied for 38th place at 10-over par 152 (78-74).
