GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The first round of the postseason is over for the UF women’s golf team. The Gators are eyeing the start of the second round — and a better result — when the NCAA Tournament opens May 6.

Florida seeks to improve its performance in the upcoming East Lansing (Mich.) Regional after finishing 13th at the SEC Tournament.

In that quest the Gators will lean heavily on their two youngest players: Inès Archer and Paula Francisco.

Archer is a freshman from Rennes, France, and is majoring in economics. She grew up playing golf with her brothers and quickly fell in love with the game. She hasn’t stopped playing the game since she was 12. She credits her determination and perseverance for where she is today.

Inès Archer led the Gators by tying for 20th in her postseason debut earlier this month at the SEC Tournament, held at Pelican Golf Club in Pinellas County. Archer turned in her lowest round of the tournament on the final day, shooting an even-par 70.

“I have been working very hard this winter and right now I am trying to have the best mindset that I can,” said Archer. “I am trying to be more in the present moment, not be scared of failure, and overthink less about the outcomes of what I am about to do.”

Her teammate, Paula Francisco, carded her best round of the tournament with a 74 in the final round. Like Archer, Francisco is a first-year player from Europe. A freshman majoring in data science, Francisco is originally from Madrid, Spain. Both players have a similar path that led them to want to play at UF.

“I think that Gator Nation is special,” Francisco said. “The coaches, the weather, and the team were the main factors for my decision.”

Ines agreed has a similar view of playing for the Orange & Blue.

“In France, it is really hard to practice when it is cold, but now I do not have to deal with that,” she said. “The school is just massive and so good in every sport. My parents are proud that I am a part of Gator Nation.”

As the first-year players established roots at Florida, they have picked up tips from their coaches and teammates to make the transition smoother.
