USC Women’s Golf Stays in First After Second Round at NCAA East Lansing Regional

Women’s Golf | May 07, 2024

EAST LANSING, Mich. – No. 6 USC women’s golf continued its pace, as it used a successful back nine stretch to push themselves back out in front by two strokes in the NCAA East Lansing Regional at the Forest Akers West Golf Course.

Freshman Bailey Shoemaker held her lead on day two, as she carded a 71 (-1) to push her to eight-under par for the tournament. Shoemaker sits one stroke over Notre Dame’s Lauren Beaudrau as she is seven-under-par overall. The Trojans as a team still holds a two stroke lead at six-under par, and Northwestern is second at four-under par.

USC as a team had a tough front nine, as it totaled nine-over-par for all five competitors, however the back nine let the Trojans overcome a three-stroke difference as they were five-under-par as a squad. Shoemaker had the best stretch on the back nine, as she was two-under, the freshman had four birdies and two bogeys during that run.

The biggest mover of the day was junior Amari Avery. Avery tied Shoemaker for the day, as she also carded a 71 (-1). The junior moved up 14 spots, as she sits just inside the top-25 at two-over-par for the tournament. Avery posted two birdies on each side of the course, but was limited to one bogey on the back side compared to two on the front.

Sophomore Catherine Park and senior Brianna Navarrosa sit in a tie for 14th at an Even par after two days on the course. Navarrosa had the better round of the two, as she went one-over for the day. Her only hiccup of the afternoon was a double-bogey on No. 5, but other then that she produced three birdies and just two bogeys. Park was two-over for the afternoon, as she put together at 38 (+2) on the front and a 36 (Even) on the back side.

Senior Christine Wang is the last of the Trojans in terms of scoring, as she is now seven-over par for the tournament (tied for 47th). Wang was three-over par for the day, but posted a successful back nine at one-under par.

The Women of Troy only have one day left to remain at the top of the leaderboard as they tee off at 6:15 a.m. PST/9:15 a.m. EST at the Forest Akers West Course in East Lansing, Mich.
