Wu shares lead, Gators two back in fourth

PALOS VERDES, Calif. – Florida women’s golfer Siuue Wu shares the lead at 5-under through round one of the Therese Hession Regional Challenge with the Gators in fourth and two back of the lead.

In the second spring outing, Florida had a team round of 284 (E) for the team’s seventh consecutive round of par or better. The next three teams atop the leaderboard feature No. 6 Oregon (-1), No. 4 USC (-2) and No. 3 South Carolina (-2).

The first Gator to tee off at Palos Verdes Golf Club, Wu set the tone with a season-best 5-under 66. She is tied with Kaylyn Noah (Cal) for the individual lead. After sitting 2-over through the first four holes, the freshman went 7-under bogey-free to finish the opening round. She had stretches for three straight birdies (holes 6-8) and a pair of back-to-back (12-13 & 15-16). The last Gator first-year to shoot a 66 was Sophie Stevens last season at the Cougar Classic and is tied for the third-lowest round by score in program history.

Posting a season-opening T4 last week, Inès Archer erased a late double-bogey on the 13th with back-to-back birdies on 16 & 17 for a round one of even-par 71. She is T13 and was one of 16 golfers to shoot par or better today.

The next two in the lineup, Paula Francisco (+2, T26) and Addison Klonowski (+3, T42) finished a stroke from each other. Florida’s not counting score in the lineup was from Elaine Widjaja (+9) who is T79.

Competing as an individual in the second spring tournament, Sophie Stevens (+6) is tied for 67th.

Florida tees off round two tomorrow at 12 p.m., the final round is slated for a 11:15 a.m. shotgun start on Tuesday.
