Men's Golf Opens Season at Frederica Cup

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – The Mississippi State men’s golf team will begin its season at the inaugural Frederica Cup in Georgia on Sept. 7-8. The tournament will be played on the par-72, 7,309-yard course at the Frederica Golf Club. The competitive field consists of seven other schools, four of which enter ranked in the top 25.

State will face top-ranked Oklahoma, No. 3 Vanderbilt, No. 8 Texas Tech, No. 14 Arkansas, No. 15 Georgia, Ohio State and TCU. The tournament will be played in a six-man, five-score format. The Bulldogs will tee off at 7:24 a.m. CT on Wednesday.

“I am looking forward to beginning our journey this week,” head coach Dusty Smith, who is entering his sixth season in Starkville, said. “This is our first step to a long season. Our goal this week is to compete at a high level and to play within ourselves and to play within the standard of Mississippi State golf. I am excited for these guys this week as we begin to climb.”

The first three of the Bulldogs’ starting lineup features veteran experience in Ford Clegg, Hunter Logan and Ruan Pretorius followed by Garrett Endicott, Harrison Davis and William Wann.

In the No. 1 spot, Clegg played in all 11 team events last year. He has competed in every tournament in his Mississippi State career and will be making his 41st appearance. The graduate student has etched his name in several records in program history (T-2nd for lowest round, T-1st for 54-hole total), and this will be his last year of eligibility.

The No. 2 spot features Logan, a senior. Logan led the Bulldogs in par or better rounds with 16 and three top-10 finishes last year with two top-five performances. His best finish was tied for second at the Nexus Collegiate in the Bahamas in February.

Pretorius will fill the No. 3 spot for the Bulldogs. The graduate student is entering his second season with Mississippi State and competed in seven of the team events in the 2021-22 season. Pretorius’ best finish last year was tied for third in the All-American Intercollegiate, shooting a career-best 66 in the second round of the tournament.

Freshman Garrett Endicott makes his MSU debut in the No. 4 slot. He qualified for the Texas 6A State championship all four years of high school and was nominated as San Antonio Golfer of the Year in 2021 and 2022.
