Cougs Conclude Saint Mary's Invitational


PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – Senior Pono Yanagi finished in the top-20 as the Washington State men’s golf team concluded its final tournament of the fall season at the 2022 Saint Mary’s Invitational.

Yanagi shot 1-over; 72 on his third round to finish the tournament at 4-over; 217. The Hilo, Hawai’i native closed out the final tournament of the fall season in 20th place after he jumped five spots on the player leaderboard during Wednesday’s third round. 

The Cougars tied for the most eagles during the three-day tournament with three, as freshmen Daniel Kim and Sam Renner, along with junior Preston Bebich, each collected an eagle at the Poppy Hill Golf Club. 

Kim carded 3-over; 74 in his final 18 holes and finished in a tie for 38th place, as he shot 9-over; 222 after three rounds in Northern California. 

The Cougars had one individual represent WSU at the Saint Mary’s Invitational, as redshirt junior Tianyu Wu posted his best round at Poppy Hills on day three, finishing at 2-over; 73 to conclude the tournament in a tie for 50th with teammate junior Preston Bebich. Both Cougs finished the 2022 Saint Mary’s Invitational shooting 12-over; 225. 

Washington State finished 10th at the 2022 Saint Mary’s Invitational. The Cougars shot 14-over; 298 in the third round to conclude the Saint Mary’s Invite at 33-over; 885. Washington State closed out the third round two strokes ahead of No. 39 BYU. 

San Diego took the team title after carding 1-under; 70 in the third round to finish the Saint Mary’s Invitational at 7-under; 845. Fresno State’s Matthew Manganello shot 7-under; 206 to earn the individual title. 

Washington State will now head into the winter break after playing in five tournaments this fall. The Cougars return to action February 16-18 in Lihue, Hawai’i for the 2022 John Burns Intercollegiate.
