Sophomore Amari Avery carded a 3-over 75 while incoming freshman Bailey Shoemaker carded a 5-over 77 in the first round of the 2023 Augusta National Women’s Amateur on Wednesday (March 29) at Champions Retreat.
Avery is tied for 32nd in the 72-woman field made up of the world’s top amateurs while Shoemaker is tied for 52nd.
The top 30 and ties after Thursday’s second round at Champions Retreat will advance to Saturday’s final round played at Augusta National.
Friday will feature a practice round for the entire field at Augusta.
Avery opened her day with a birdie on 1 before ultimately turning at 3-over. She was even on the back with a bogey on 14 and a round-closing birdie on 18. Shoemaker went out at 2-over and came home at 3-over.
Avery will tee off at 5:35 a.m. PT on Thursday while Shoemaker begins at 6:21 a.m. PT.
