Maryland Trio Earn Big Ten Postseason Honors


COLLEGE PARK, MD – Three Maryland student-athletes were recognized for their achievements 2022-23 season, the Big Ten Conference announced on Wednesday. Junior Patricie Mackova and freshman Nicha Kanpai were named to the All-Big Ten First Team and senior Angela Garvin earned a Sportsmanship Award from the league.

Mackova ranked No. 28 nationally, was selected by the Big Ten women’s golf head coaches to the All-Big Ten First Team. Throughout the season, Mackova has helped No. 33 Maryland achieve six top-five finishes while personally having eight top-10 finishes, including her collegiate win at the Yale Invitational with a season-scoring average of 71.63. Mackova was also named the All-Big Ten First Team during the 2021-22 season. The biochemistry major from Prague, Czech Republic, was ranked 17th in the 2023 Arnold Player Cup International Player Rankings. 

“Patricie has consistently been one of the top players in the Big Ten, and we’re excited to see her recognized for her record-setting performances this season,” said head coach Kelly Hovland.

Kanpai, ranked 86th nationally, was also selected to the All-Big Ten First Team; this marks her first Big Ten honor. She is the first freshman to earn All-Big Ten First Team honors in program history. Kanpai had her best showing of the season at the Barbara Nicklaus Cup, where she was the runner-up, with three top-10 finishes.

“Nicha put together the best freshman season in program history, and we are proud that she is being recognized on the All-Big Ten First Team,” said coach Hovland.

Garvin was Maryland’s recipient for the Sportsmanship Award. This season the Feeding Hills, Ma. native teed it up in eight out of 10 events, with her best finish coming in a tie for 18th at the Briar’s Creek Invitational. The Management major was named a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar in 2021 and to the Academic All-Big Ten Team in both the 2021 and 2022 seasons.

Angela Garvin is a first-class person on and off the course,” said coach Hovland. “Her sportsmanship and integrity is a great example of how to represent the University of Maryland.”

Maryland will await its fate to see where it will head to play in the NCAA Regionals for a chance to compete in the NCAA Championship at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz. Fans can watch the NCAA Selection Show on Golf Channel on Wednesday,…
