Sampson Zheng became the 18th Golden Bear in program history to earn GCAA All-America honors.

Cal Standout Tabbed To GCAA’s Second Team Following Junior Season

NORMAN, Okla. – California men’s golfer Sampson Zheng added to his haul of accolades when he was selected to the 2023 NCAA Division I PING All-America Second Team by the Golf Coaches Association of America on Tuesday.

Zheng is one of 31 men’s golfers nationwide and one of just four Pac-12 Conference golfers to be named to the first, second or third teams by the GCAA. He’s also the 18th Golden Bear in program history and the first since Collin Morikawa in 2019 to earn GCAA All-America honors (Sebastian Crampton and KK Limbhasut also received honorable mentions in ’19).

Zheng is coming off one of the best individual seasons in program history, having finished the 2022-23 season ranked 15th and 30th nationally by Golfstat and Golfweek, respectively, after shooting 41-under par with an average of 69.83 strokes across 31 rounds played in 10 events. The junior placed inside the top 10 individually six times, finished 22nd or better in all 10 events played and recorded 14 total rounds in the 60s. His standout season included co-medalist honors at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate, a runner-up effort that helped Cal win the team title at the Alister Mackenzie Invitational, back-to-back fifth-place finishes at The Goodwin and the Western Intercollegiate, and a tie for seventh place in the NCAA Morgan Hill Regional in May.

Zheng, who originally hails from Tianjin, China, and came to Cal by way of Nagoya, Japan, was named an All-West Region Team selection by the GCAA in late May and was tabbed to the All-Pac-12 First Team. Zheng will start play at the prestigious Arnold Palmer Cup on Thursday at Laurel Valley Golf Club in Ligonier, Pennsylvania. He was an automatic qualifier for the international team based on his 2022-23 season performance through April.
