Aggies in Fourth Place at The Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate - Texas A&M Athletics


ALPHARETTA, Ga. – The No. 15 Texas A&M men’s golf team carded a 6-under 282 Friday to position the Aggies in fourth place at The Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate Invitational.
 

Texas A&M and Tennessee are seven strokes behind first-place East Tennessee State (13-under 275). The Maroon & White also look to leapfrog Virginia (10-under 278) and Wake Forest (7-under 281).
 
Phichaksn Maichon and Jaime Montojo paced the Maroon & White in the opening round at the par-72, 7,092-yard Lakeside Course at The Golf Club of Georgia. The pair posted 3-under 69s. Maichon fired six birdies while Montojo posted five birdies, including four on his final nine holes of the day.
 
Maichon and Montojo trail the leaders ETSU’s Algot Kleen and Virginia’s Paul Chang by two strokes.
 
Daniel Rodrigues is tied for 13th place after posting a 2-under 70. His day included four birdies and an eagle on the par-4 No. 2. Aaron Pounds and Vishnu Sadagopan registered rounds of 2-over 74.
 
The Aggies begin Saturday’s second round at 9:50 a.m., teeing up at No. 1 paired with Northwestern and Wake Forest.

On Friday’s round…
“We had it going there through 11 holes. We turned to the front and made a few birdies up on No. 1 and a couple on No. 2 plus Dani (Rodrigues) made an eagle. So we kind of got things going there, but then we kind of stalled out playing some par-4s there the next three or four holes. We scored the ball pretty good, making 18 birdies. But we have to get the ball on the fairway. We didn’t do that very well today, and that is typically a strength of ours. Tomorrow we’ll focus on doing a better job of that.”
 
On the rounds by Phichaksn Maichon, Jaime Montojo and Daniel Rodrigues near the top of the leaderboard…
“Those are guys that we’re going to lean on to lead us through the season. So it was good to see them have nice rounds today. But all three will tell you that they left a ton out there.
