Villegas Named SCGA Player of the Year


LOS ANGELES – Senior Kate Villegas on the No. 7 UCLA women’s golf team was named the 2023 Southern California Golf Association (SCGA) Player of the Year, it was announced Thursday afternoon.
 
Villegas won three summer titles in 2023, including the 27th California Women’s Championship and 57th California Women’s Amateur. She won her California Women’s Championship title in Ojai, Calif. on Aug. 10 after sinking a birdie on the first hole of a four-way playoff.  
 
Villegas also became the first golfer to successfully repeat as champion in the SCGA Match Play Women’s Division. Alongside UCLA teammate Tiffany Le, Villegas finished runner-up in the U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball Championship at The Home Course in DuPont, Wash.
 
She has won 17 out of her last 18 SCGA/USGA-sanctioned matches.
 
The Arcadia, Calif. native has had an impressive start to her UCLA career with a steady 71.6 scoring average in her first three events. Her best finish in Fall 2023 was a t-14th mark at the Windy City Collegiate Classic where she shot 5-under (68-71-72).
