Janangelo Inducted into Connecticut Golf Hall of Fame

CROMWELL, Conn. – After an impressive amateur and professional golf career, Duke women’s golf 2006 graduate Liz Janangelo was rewarded on Thursday, Dec. 7 as she was inducted into the Connecticut Golf Hall of Fame during a ceremony at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Conn.

Janangelo, who started playing golf when she was three years old, won her first amateur tournament at the age of 13 when she earned the title at the Connecticut Women’s Amateur in 1997.  She went on to win five Connecticut Women’s Amateur titles in a row.

When Janangelo committed to Duke, she was the top-ranked junior golfer in the country.  She went on to win eight American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) titles prior to attending Duke, including two majors – the 2001 Betsy Rawls Junior Girls Championship and the 2001 Polo Junior Classic.  Janangelo was tabbed a two-time Polo Golf First Team All-American and the 2001 Polo Golf Girls Junior Player of the Year.

In her time in Durham, Janangelo made a tremendous impact as she won seven individual titles as a Blue Devil, which still ranks tied for fourth on Duke’s all-time career wins list.  She helped lead Duke to the 2005 and 2006 NCAA Championships.  As a sophomore, Janangelo was named National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) National Player of the Year, ACC Player of the Year and won the GolfStat Cup.  She also set the NCAA 18-hole scoring record with a 9-under, 62, at the ACC/SEC Challenge.

A native of West Hartford, Conn., Janangelo went on to be named NGCA First Team All-America each of her four years at Duke and helped lead the Blue Devils to four consecutive ACC Championships.

Janangelo continued her dominance in the state of Connecticut going on to win four straight Connecticut Women’s Open titles, beginning with a win in 2003.  She made her first cut at the U.S. Women’s Open in 2003 and represented the United States at the 2004 Curtis Cup.

Following graduation from Duke in 2006, she turned professional and played on the Futures Tour.  She collected two wins in the 2007 season and then earned her LPGA Tour card in 2008.

Janangelo is still involved in golf as he teaches golf in the state of Connecticut.
