McMyler Wins Third Straight to Close Play at Old Barnwell


AIKEN, S.C. Duke women’s golf graduate student Emma McMyler closed action at the Old Barnwell Match Play on Tuesday by winning her third straight match in Aiken, S.C.
 

McMyler, who hails from San Antonio, Texas, collected a 3&1 win over Vairana Heck of South Carolina on Tuesday morning to finish 3-0 in the event.  Over the three matches, McMyler was impressive as she defeated the No. 2, No. 30 and No. 126 ranked golfers in the World Amateur Golf Ranking. 
 
As a team, ninth-ranked Duke faced South Carolina and finished in a 1-1-3 tie. The Gamecocks were named champions after winning the most holes in the match. 
 
How It Happened – Duke vs. South Carolina

  • In the first match out, Duke’s Anne Chen faced Maylis Lamoure of the Gamecocks.The two were tied through four holes before Chen parred the fifth to go 1UP.Chen, a native of Sugar Land, Texas, led by as many as 2UP through the next 12 holes.A bogey by Chen on No. 17 led to a tie with one hole remaining.Chen drained a 7-foot come back putt on 18 to finish the match with a tie.
  • South Carolina’s Mia Sandtorv jumped out to a fast start against Duke’s Andie Smith in the second match.Sandtorv led by as many as 3UP over the first 17 holes.Smith, who is from Hobe Sound, Fla., started making her comeback on the back nine.She won holes No. 14 and No. 16 to trail by one hole with two remaining.Then on No. 18, Smith hit her pitching wedge from 126 yards to eight feet and made the putt to complete the comeback and tie the match.
  • Blue Devil freshman Katie Li and Louise Rydqvist of South Carolina featured a back-and-forth match. Both golfers birdied the first hole and then Rydqvist birdied the second hole to go 1UP in the match.The golfers traded holes the rest of the front nine.Li, who is from Basking Ridge, N.J., took her first lead with a birdie on No. 8, but Rydqvist regained the advantage on No. 10.Li won holes 11 and 13 to go back ahead 1UP.Rydqvist took back to lead with a win on No. 16 and Li converted a 9-foot par on No. 17 to send the match to 18.Li rolled in a 5-foot par putt on No. 18 to win the hole and finish the match in a tie.
  • Senior Phoebe Brinker went up against South Carolina’s Sophia Burnett in the fourth match out in the morning.After being tied for the first three holes, Burnett won No. 4 and never trailed the rest of the…
