LAHAINA, Maui — The University of Colorado men’s golf team opened in ninth place here Friday after one round of the Ka’anapali Classic Collegiate Invitational, the Buffaloes final event of the fall season.
Clemson turned in the top score in the first round, a 17-under 267, as all five of the Tigers’ designated scorers carded subpar rounds in the 60s. Eleventh-ranked Oklahoma is just one back at 268, with East Tennessee State right there, two off the pace at 269. North Florida is fourth (273), with Kansas and Mississippi rounding out the top five (275).
The Buffaloes top two performers this fall didn’t play their best, but still are ninth in the strong 20-team field with a 5-under 279 score.
Sophomore Tucker Clark paced the Buffaloes Friday, as he carded a 4-under 67 that has him tied for 11th. He was steady, matching the team-best for the most birdies in a round this fall with seven (which are third-most in the field), along with scoring eight pars and three bogeys on The Royal Ka’anapali Golf Course, which features a 6,700-yard, par-71 layout on the northwest coast of Maui.
Sophomore Jack Holland is tied for 16th after fashioning a 3-under 68, as he was fairly steady as well. He recorded CU’s lone eagle (on the 485-yard, par-5 9th) and had three birdies and 12 pars opposite just two bogeys.
Sophomore Dylan McDermott turned in an even-par 71 to sit in a 49th place tie. He was cruising along at 2-under after a couple of early birdies, but a pair of double bogeys in a span of six holes sent him on the unhappy side of par. But he rallied to birdie two holes down the stretch (Nos. 6 and 9) to get back to even par. That enabled him to tie the school record of 11 consecutive rounds of par or better, set by Yannik Paul in 2017-18.
Sophomore Justin Biwer is tied for 78th after scoring a 2-over 73; he bogeyed his opening hole (No. 13), but hung within that number until Nos. 7 through 9, where he scored a double bogey and then immediately came back with two birdies. It ended a run of six straight subpar rounds.
Freshman Hunter Swanson struggled early on in shooting a 4-over 75, tying him for 104th place. After opening with a par on No. 14, he scored two doubles followed by two bogeys to stand 6-over through five. But the heralded freshman from Denver gathered himself in and finished up the…
