TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama men’s golf will return to action this weekend when it travels to Panama City Beach, Fla., to compete at the Watersound Invitational, hosted by Florida State. The three-day, 54-hole event will take place Sunday through Tuesday on the par 72, 7,246-yard Sharks Tooth Golf Club course in Panama City Beach, Fla.
The Lineup
- The Tide’s starting five for the event will consist of Canon Claycomb, Thomas Ponder, Nick Dunlap, Jonathan Griz and JP Cave
- Additionally, Alabama will have two competing as individuals at the event in Jones Free and Jack Goldasich
- Claycomb, who ended the fall season ranked No. 14 in the PGA Tour University Individual Rankings, returns to the same event that he won a year ago to claim his first individual medalist honor after carding a career-best tournament total of 14-under par 202
- Three UA golfers enter the event averaging under 71.00 strokes per round in Ponder (70.60), Dunlap (70.67) and Claycomb (70.73)
- In terms of total strokes, Ponder has recorded 1,059, one shot better than Dunlap’s 1,060 and two fewerthan Claycomb’s 1,061
- Griz, who fired a round of 69 in his final 18 holes at the spring season-opening John Hayt Invitational, will compete in his second tournament of the spring as well and fourth appearance for the Tide this season
- JP Cave, who placed a top 30 finish in last year’s Watersound Invitational, will round out the Tide’s lineup by making his third appearance for the Tide this year and first of the spring season

- The 11-team field features nine teams ranked in Golfstat’s top-40 national rankings, headlined by No. 1 Vanderbilt and tournament host No. 11 Florida State, along with No. 12 Georgia Tech, No. 16. Oklahoma State, No. 17 Alabama, No. 24 Mississippi State, No. 36 Notre Dame and No. 40 Clemson
- NC State and Virginia Tech are also competing in the event
