McDermott Named Honorable Mention All-American

BOULDER — University of Colorado sophomore Dylan McDermott was named to the Golf Coaches Association of America’s PING-All-America team Tuesday, earning honorable mention recognition.

“It’s an honor to be a member of the All-America teams,” McDermott said.  “It’s always been a goal of mine and to be able to say that is awesome.  I’ve had a good year, but hopefully will be able to learn from the good and bad and do even better in the future.”

That added to his long list of accolades for the 2022-23 season, which included first-team PING All-West Region and first-team All-Pac-12 honors, a two-time Pac-12 player of the week pick, a five-time CU Athlete of the Week selection and medalist honors in the Notre Dame Fighting Irish Classic.  He was also selected as CU’s co-Male Athlete of the Year at the school’s annual CUSPY’s (CU Sports Performers of the Year), sharing the award with skiing’s Filip Forejtek, the NCAA giant slalom champion.

He ended the season ranked No. 43 by GolfStat and No. 93 by Golfweek, the disparity more than questionable; he is also currently the 238th ranked amateur in the world, rising over 600 spots since the start of the season.

“‘Dylan has had an outstanding, record-breaking year – one of the best in CU history,” CU head coach Roy Edwards said.  “The All-America teams are as deep as I can ever remember with all the COVID exempt players still playing in college.  It is a great honor for Dylan, and something he will surely build on into the summer and next season.”

He set the stage for his sensational sophomore year by qualifying for last summer’s U.S. Amateur and tying for 20th in the Trans-Mississippi Amateur, one of the top amateur events in the nation.  He then opened the year with his win at Notre Dame, five straight top 15 finishes in the fall, and runner-up spring finishes in the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate and in the Pac-12 Championship.  He was 2-1 against Stanford’s Michael Thorbjornsen, ranked No. 3 in the world, 1-1 against North Carolina’s David Ford, the No. 4 ranked player, and 1-0 against Texas A&M’s Sam Bennett (No. 5), who was the low amateur in the Masters in April.

Record-breaking is an understatement; he set 10 school records and led the team in a record-breaking 36 statistical categories (*—indicates school record): rounds (41), *stroke average (70.12), stroke…
