One Round Down at PGA West

LA QUINTA, Calif. – Karl Vilips shot a 1-under 70 in the first trip around the Greg Norman course to put himself in the top-25 of the leaderboard as round one of The Prestige came to a close on Monday evening.

The Australian notched three birdies and two bogeys on the day for his sixth consecutive competition round under par as Vilips registered Stanford’s best round of the day.

Michael Thorbjornsen tied for a team-leading four birdies in his opening round, but two bogeys and a double-bogey on the par-4 10th left him at even par for the day to sit in the middle of the pack after 18 holes.

Making his first appearance in the starting lineup since the Stephens Cup in October, Kush Arora finished the day 2-over par as a final hole double bogey capped off an up-and-down round for him that also consisted of four birdies and four bogeys.

Jake Beber-Frankel had a cleaner scorecard but ultimately finished with the same result as Arora, as the senior couldn’t battle back from a early round double-bogey with only one birdie and one bogey on the day.  Barlcay Brown finished five over on the day as the non-scoring round of the team event.

In the individual competition on the Par-72 Terra Lago North Course, three Cardinal finished inside the top-20, headlined by a 1-under round by Dean Greyserman. Ethan Gao and Sean-Karl Dobson each finished even par after 18 holes while Anton Ouyang finished 6-over in his first competition of the season.

Action resumes at The Prestige tomorrow morning as tee times begin at 6:45 a.m. in the team event and 7:30 a.m. for the individual competition.
