Sun Devils Defeat Vanderbilt and Denver

CHANDLER, Ariz. – Sun Devil Women’s Golf opened the Spring portion of the 2023 campaign with an impressive performance.

Arizona State defeated No. 19 Vanderbilt and Denver in the first ever match play event taking place at Whirlwind Golf Club (Cattail Course). Six Sun Devils got the chance to compete in the state of Arizona for the first time, representing the Maroon & Gold.

“We looked really sharp for our first outing of the Spring, which I am very excited about,” Head Coach Missy Farr-Kaye remarked. “It was very cloudy and cool out, but we handled that well.”

The Sun Devils showed little signs of rust after the long break, taking care of business in their first chance back out on the course since November. They defeated Denver 17.5.-0.5, while simultaneously capturing the match with Vanderbilt by a final mark of 14-4.

“I challenged them at the end of the Fall to be ready to go, and they have,” Coach Farr-Kaye observed. “I appreciate that and am proud of them. This group feels that they have something to prove and they looked great.”

The three teams played in six pairings, with each golfer competing against two other individuals in each match. Arizona State won the most matches at the event by far, making them the winners of this one-of-a-kind event. Missy Farr-Kaye‘s team got the chance to test themselves against two teams that made the NCAA Championship last season, while also gaining experience in the format that decides the Team Champion.

“It was a great chance to play against two really good teams in a match play format,” Coach Farr-Kaye added. “We get to tee it up again in a week and compete with five other teams.”
