Jakubcik and Pollo Pace Cats In First Day of Cabo Collegiate

CABO SAN LUCAS, Mexico – Behind a pair of 1-under rounds of 70 from sophomores Filip Jakubcik and Zach Pollo, no. 9 Arizona Men’s Golf ended the first day of the Cabo Collegiate at 6-over par and amongst a pack of teams in the middle of the leaderboard. The sophomore tandem was at their best on Twin Dolphin Club’s back-nine holes as Pollo made eagle on the 593-yard, Par-5 16th hole and Jakubcik had a trio of birdies and no bogeys.

“We had our moments in today’s round, but we weren’t able to sustain good play throughout the day,” said head coach Jim Anderson. “Being in the middle of the pack after one day means we have opportunities to get better and improve tomorrow. This is a hungry, driven group, and they are eager to get back out there. With a couple of minor adjustments on a few holes, I expect us to learn and come out and shoot better scores.”

Jakubcik and Pollo sit in a tie for 13th place at 1-under to lead the Wildcats and sit three strokes back of tournament leader, Jake Hall from Tennessee, at 4-under par. Jakubcik was the only Arizona golfer, and one of a handful out of the field, to play bogey-free golf on the back nine. Pollo sank one of only two eagles recorded all day on Sunday to end the first round in a tie for par-5 scoring average.

Arizona enters Monday’s second round tied with Texas Tech for eighth place at 6-over but are within six strokes of the next five teams above them on the leaderboard.
