Sun Men's Golf the First-Round Leader in Mexico; #ForksUp to Mason Andersen

Just a few days removed from its worst tournament in a long time, the Sun Devil men’s golf team jumped to the top of the leaderboard at the 15-team Cabo Collegiate on Sunday at the Twin Dolphin Golf Club.

Michael Mjaaseth and Joselle Ballester each fired a 3-under 68 and are tied for the lead. Ballester had a clean card with three birdies on the back nine while Mjaaseth posted an eagle on the par-5, 593-yard 16th hole after double-bogeying No. 15. He had five birdies on the day.

ASU earned the lead on the par-4 holes, shooting 4-under and was one of just two teams (Vanderbilt at -1) under par on the short holes. Preston Summerhays leads the field on the par-3 holes at 3-under, while Mjaaseth is one of two players at 4-under on the par-4 holes.

The best news of the day was 2022 All-American Mason Andersen earning a trip to the British Open with a win on the Korn Ferry Tour at Argentine Open in Buenos Aires. The Korn Ferry Tour crowned yet another first-time winner, its fifth in a row to start the 2024 season, as Andersen defeated two-time winner Kris Ventura on the second hole of a sudden-death playoff. Through the Visa Argentina Open’s partnership with The R&A, Andersen’s victory also earned him an exemption for the 2024 Open Championship at Royal Troon. Andersen began the day six strokes back and bogeyed two of the first five holes

INDIVIDUAL WINNER GETS

A new development for the Cabo Collegiate is this year’s medalist will receive a sponsor’s exemption to play in the PGA Tour’s World Wide Technology Championship in Los Cabos, Mexico later this year.
