Rossi Fires Career-Best Round, Spartans Make Second Round Move


East Lansing, Mich. – Junior Valentina Rossi fired a career-best 6-under par 66 on Saturday afternoon and Michigan State’s women’s golf team posted a 4-under par to move up four places in the team standings at the ASU Invitational, being played at Papago Golf Club in Tempe, Ariz.

The three-day stroke play event, being played on the par 72, 6,543-yard course, concludes with 18 holes on Sunday.

The Spartans, who were tied for 11th place after Friday’s first round, shot a 4-under par 284 and is in seventh place among 17 teams with a 9-over par 585.

Northwestern continues to lead the field at 12-under par, holding an eight-shot lead over host Arizona State, in second place at 4-under 572. Baylor is in third place at 1-over par 577, Mississippi State is in third place at 2-over par 578 and Oregon rounds out the top-five teams at 4-over par 580.

Texas is in sixth place at 8-over par 584, with the Spartans just one shot back.

The Spartans opened the morning on the back nine and Rossi had two pars and a birdie followed by two more pars in her first five holes. She closed out the back nine with birdies on two of her final four holes and continued her strong play with two more birdies on the first four holes of the front nine.

Rossi closed her round with a birdie on the par-5, 512-yard ninth hole to post the best round of her career by two shots. She is tied for 12th place at even-par 144.

Sophomore Shannon Kennedy, who finished with a 3-over par 75 and was tied for 39th place on Friday, shot a 1-under par 71 with four birdies and 11 pars to finish in a tie for 26th place 2-over par 146.

Sophomore Brooke Biermann posted her second-straight round of 2-over par 73 and is tied with Kennedy for 26th place at 2-over par 146.

Junior Leila Raines and sophomore Katie Lu are tied for 55th place with scores of 7-over par 151. Lu shot a 2-over par 74 in the second round while Raines posted a 3-over par 75.

The Spartans tee off at 11 a.m. (ET), playing alongside Oregon State and Southern California.
